Strange Short Stories II - :Doorways:

It was foggy.

Deep, blue fog had rolled in that morning; and no one was around the city in it.

Not since a few months ago.

A fog has settled on the city one day and everyone that went out into the streets vanished.

As if they got lost in their own city.

No one had seen any of them since.

Yet he could hear foot steps outside.

Someone was running; and fast, but not in any particular direction.

The man with his hat on, leaned out the window to look around.

As foot steps drew closer he realized they were panicking; whoever they were, from the pattern of their footsteps alone.

Suddenly a cry cut through the fog!

"HELLO!!! Can anyone help me!?! Someone??? IS ANYONE OUT THERE?!?!" came the call.

The man with the hat decided he was, indeed, THERE.

So he called back out.

"Come towards my voice!!! I will meet you at the doorway!!"

"No!! NO MORE DOOR WAYS!!!" came the response.

Slightly odd; he thought to himself as he left his abode and walked down the hallway to the staircase that led to the main door of the complex he lived in.

Upon opening the door and entering the fog; he could feel a sudden sensation of bodies, and people swirling and moving around him everywhere.

No wonder everyone was staying inside.

"I am over here!!!" he called out again

This time there was no response.

Walking out further into the fog, he soon realized it would be best to not leave his block or wander too far; for some reason his mind has started swimming and filling with abstract thoughts and ideas; none of which he had ever really experienced before.

Upon rounding the corner of his building he found the women huddled up in the corner of the dingy alleyway; behind the dumpsters.

"Please! Help me!!!" she whimpered while reaching out towards him.

His mind started reeling with the possibilities of this.

Was she some strange homeless person, a murderer maybe?

What kind of thoughts were these; he had to get it together and see what was happening.

Approaching her he said:
"Come in out of the fog if you want; but we gotta go through that door over there." he pointed towards the entrance of his building.

"Okay, okay, okay... Just get me out of the fog; please!" was the implored answer.

Upon entering the building and settling down on the couch, she started shaking violently from confusion and fear.

She stared down at his fancy rug.

The intricate patterns on the floor seemed to hypnotize her.

"They took me there!" she exclaimed with a sudden realization; and pointed towards the rug and a design on said rug that depicted strange wheels, bands of colour and intertwining patterns of lines.

"Who took you there?"

"The others! They said we all forgot about them; and our reality was disconnecting from theirs!"

"Um... Oh yeah?"

"That`s why they took us all! They took us to remind us that our reality is not just what is here; and what we perceive!!! I want to go back, I want to go back so bad! To the warmth and splendor of their world!!!"

"Well I guess your stuck here for now... How did you get there anyway?"

"My friends and I... We were out walking around one night in the fog, when everything started to shudder and bend; that`s when the doorways opened and pulled us in! Everyone is still back there; they sent me back to tell others about this place and the beings and people there! If we destroy our world here, or move away from theirs too far everything will collapse!!!"

.THE END.
